The North of England YDP workshop took place on the 13th of August near York. The hosts for the day were Adrian & Penny Johnson; whilst the trainers were Thomas Slowen, John Reynolds and Ashley Mcinness.

One of the young eager farmers that was present at the workshop was Emily Wilson, age 17, from Thirsk.

Emily has kindly shared her experience of her day with us:

“The Angus Youth Development programme is one of the most interesting and beneficial workshops I have ever done. It has really helped me hone in on specific skills such as clipping and how to properly tie a halter to a gate! As well as this, I watched professionals clip, dress and wash the beast correctly. We were also given the opportunity to practice it for ourselves, this really helped me as I have never clipped before and it has given me the confidence to be able to clip an animal in order to make it look it's absolute best. The washing session was also very interesting (as well as tiring) as you learnt how to properly wash an animal without a power washer, we had to make sure all of the soap and show products were washed out. After this we moved onto stock judging and were given little tips and helpers as to what to look for in the ideal breeding heifer. To finish off the day we practised our ring craft and were shown the best technique of how to show an animal when in the ring. All in all it was a great experience and one in which I definitely hope to take part in next year! I would just like to say a massive thank you to the Angus Society for giving young people, including myself, this great opportunity to learn and develop new skills.”

Thank you to Emily for sharing her great experience with us. We would also like to thank all the other participants for contributing to what was another great YDP workshop. Lastly, a big thank you to the hosts and trainers as without them these events would not be possible. Keep an eye out for more updates from the remaining workshops this year!
